9 Now
9Now is an industry leading video on demand service, delivering live and catch up content across 12 platforms including responsive web, iOS and Android. This was an exciting opportunity to work closely with producers, developers and third parties to bring together a consistent user interface and video experience.
The process
Working on an end to end product from research to delivery. This involved conducting research to define project requirements, sketching initial concepts, defining information architecture, wireframes, building prototypes, user testing, designing the user interface, working closely with web and native developers, release and continuous improvement.
The pitch
We produced concept designs to present to stakeholders and third parties to sell in the idea of having an immersive video on demand service. The intention was to build upon Channel Nine's existing catch up service, 9Jumpin. The objective was to create an experience that made it accessible for all Australians to access on-demand and live content free from any device.
Sketching the experience
Once stakeholders were on board with the idea of creating a VOD experience, we went straight into drawing out how this could work. Since there was already received plenty of feedback and metrics to interpret from 9Jumpin, we had a deep insight into the pain points users were facing. Working as a team, we interpreted this feedback, grouped common themes together, and factored these problems into these sketches and user flows.
Using quick sketches on the whiteboard, we worked closely with developers and product managers to receive feedback and iterate.
Moving to wireframes
Producing higher fidelity wireframes allowed for more open discussions with product managers and developers. We rapidly turned the wireframes into a prototype using InVision to showcase the user flow to stakeholders, and usability testing.
Guerilla testing
As soon as we had a clickable prototype we began Guerilla testing to get feedback straight away from our customers. The purpose of this was to identify any potential issues around navigation and the experience to find and watch a show.
Gathering findings
After conducting numerous usability tests we started to group findings into common themes to get further insight into the main pain points with the current flow. We quickly iterated on our wireframes to incorporate this feedback, then test, then iterate again until we had an ideal flow for users to be able to find video content and watch with ease.
Prototyping
We began designing more detailed prototypes to showcase interactions and more enhanced features based on our feedback from usability testing.
Designing the user interface
We worked with the creative team from Channel 9 in order to keep the branding consistent across the digital platforms and broadcast and factored these elements of the branding into the User interface. We designed the user interface to be invisible to allow show content to shine through.
Specifications and continuous delivery
I worked very closely with web and native developers to bring the designs to life. Creating specifications, behavioural rules and pairing with developers in order to keep consistency across platforms and ensure the behaviour aligned with the design thinking.
